There’s something wonderfully soothing about being surrounded by cats—especially when those cats have come from difficult beginnings and are now safe, loved, and thriving in a place made just for them.
On a recent visit to Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary here in Barbados, I spent time with the residents of the cattery, and it was nothing short of therapeutic. The gentle rustle of leaves, the soft meows, and the affectionate head bumps from the cats created a calming atmosphere that felt like a balm for the soul.
As an animal lover and advocate, it’s always uplifting to see a space where animals are treated with compassion and respect. Ocean Acres is exactly that. Their cattery is peaceful, clean, and thoughtfully set up to offer the cats both comfort and enrichment. The team works tirelessly to give each cat the care and love they deserve, and they always welcome visitors who want to spend time with the animals.

It’s a win-win, really—the cats benefit from the socialisation, attention, and affection, and visitors get to experience the calm and joy that only a cat can bring. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, I wholeheartedly recommend popping by for a visit. It’s a lovely way to spend an hour or two, and it makes a difference to the animals.
There are many ways to support Ocean Acres:
You can donate directly to them or offer your time as a volunteer.
You can also support them through my Giving Back page, where a portion of proceeds from my La Cat Connoisseur “Bajan Cats Are Pawesome” collection goes towards helping the sanctuary continue their brilliant work.
Sharing this blog and the Giving Back page also helps spread the word.
And of course, don’t forget to check them out on Instagram @oceanacresanimals or visit their website to learn more about their rescue stories and ongoing needs.
Being with the cats reminded me why I do what I do. It’s about kindness, connection, and giving voice—and comfort—to those who need it most.
And now, two fun feline facts to brighten your day:
🐾 Did you know that cats have a special purr that can promote healing in humans? Studies have shown that a cat’s purring vibrations can lower stress and even aid in reducing blood pressure.
🐾 A group of cats is called a clowder. So next time you're surrounded by whiskers and tails, you can smile knowing you’re in the middle of a marvellous clowder.
